Chapter 24
Down the fence, a couple of the younger women whistled, and the rest jostled them for their misbehavior. If Liam heard them, he gave no sign.
âGive it over,â the roper said, an older man on a beautiful, buttermilk-colored horse. âIâll run it under the pump.â And he rode away holding the shirt out like a dead skunk.
Avery tried not to stare. But Liam turned away from the corralâwhich meant turning her wayâand opened the bottle of water. He dumped it over his arms and splashed it across his chest. He reminded her of a horrible, boring movie she saw once starring Bruce Lee, which she had watched because he was one of Eliâs heroes. The movie was bad, but Bruce Lee had a whole new level of movement, speed, and sharpness. Liam looked like that: tight, like every muscle had been stretched just a little too far. And the impromptu shower was just too much to ignore.
âIs he yours?â Sierra said.
Avery looked at her in confusion and saw Sierraâs long, narrow hand gesture toward Liam. âYou two an item?â
âOh, God no,â Avery said. She winced. She wasnât one to take Godâs name lightly, because sheâd always had a sneaking suspicion he paid attention when she called him, and because the times she said his name werenât usually the times she wanted him paying attention to her. But embarrassment wrung it out of her. Sheâd been caught looking in a way that made a complete stranger think he was hers.
The action started up again, but Zane left and started walking across the pasture. âWhere is he going?â Avery asked.
âProbably checking on Mara. The bunkhouse is back that way. Which means Liam is without a partner. Wanna go give it a try?â
Her new friend Poppy had a very dry sense of humor. In fact, she still wondered sometimes when she was joking. âNo, thank you.â
The clump of young women was moving amoeba-like toward the coolers, which were conveniently close to where Liam was standing. One had the audacity to snap a picture of him with her cell phone. Sierra checked the propane levels for Poppy, which left Avery to stand around feeling useless. That was when the older man rode back with Liamâs dripping shirt. Liam wrung it out and put it back on, stained but obviously cleaner. The wet shirt wasnât a whole lot less distracting than no shirt, and another young woman snapped a pic. The older man got off his horse, Liam protested, and then the older man tipped his hat and walked her way.
Liam was going to try roping. She felt sorry for him since just about everyone was watching him, and all the ropers had been excellent. But he waited his turn, trotted the beautiful horse up smoothly, and ss-ssp. The rope zipped through the air and neatly caught two back legs. How did he do that? How did any of them catch the legs at the exact moment they were off the ground? Liam tied off before she knew it and tugged the calf to the next team of wrestlers.
